If You Have a Concussion or Traumatic Brain Injury

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury (TBI) that is most often caused by a blow to the head. The leading causes of concussions are motor vehicle collisions, falls, and assaults.

Concussions disrupt the normal functioning of the brain, but like all TBI’s, each injury is unique to the injured individual. Individuals with concussions often suffer from a wide range of both physical and psychological effects. While many of symptoms of of a concussion are apparent immediately after the injury, some symptoms are only evident after several days or even weeks following the incident.

Signs and Symptoms

The common signs of a concussion may include some of the following symptoms:

  • Persistent headache or neck pain
  • Light-headedness, dizziness, and loss of balance
  • Nausea
  • Blurred vision and/or sensitivity to light
  • Ringing in ears
  • Cognitive issues that may include problems with memory and concentration
  • Confusion
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Slow reaction times
  • Lethargy
  • Changes in sleep patterns

Most people fully recover from concussions, but it is always important to seek immediate medical attention following a head injury. Make sure you are examined by a physician as soon as possible, because even what may appear to be a minor head injury can result in serious and life-changing conditions.

What is Post-Concussion Syndrome?

Post-concussion syndrome happens when an individual experiences a concussion that is left untreated and their recovery is delayed. Injured parties can suffer from issues that include headaches, dizziness, or memory issues that last for months or even years after the injury occurred.

If You Have Suffered from a Concussion

If you have suffered from a concussion or a TMI, the consequences of this kind of injury may be severe. In addition to the time it will take you to fully recover from your brain injury, the medical costs to identify and treat your issues can be significant.
