Tips for Safe Driving in Winter

Driving in Winter  Requires Extra Attention

Driving safely in Colorado during the winter months can be challenging when the roads become slick with snow and ice. After many months of mild weather conditions, it can be hard to remember that driving in winter will require extra attention. Not only do you have to drive more carefully, but you also have to ensure that your vehicle is prepared to navigate the snowy and icy roadways.

Prepare Your Vehicle for Winter

Driving safely in the winter months begins before you even start the ignition. In addition to buckling your seat belts and ensuring your windows are defrosted and clean, you should always make sure your vehicle is ready for the road. Prepare your vehicle for winter by scheduling regular tune-ups and adhering to a consistent maintenance schedule. Before winter approaches, make sure your vehicle is ready for inclement weather by installing your snow tires, checking your battery, and ensuring that your lights and signals are in good working condition before you get on the road.

Be Ready for an Emergency

Even if you have taken all the necessary safety precautions, collisions happen. Expect the best, but prepare for the worst by making sure you have the following safety items in your vehicle in case of an emergency situation:

  • Flashlight and extra batteries,
  • Jumper cables,
  • Sand or kitty litter,
  • Snowbrush and shovel
  • Ice scraper,
  • Flares,
  • Gloves,
  • Water
  • Blankets.

Additional Precautions for Longer Journeys

For long journeys, plan your route, and check the weather before you leave. Be familiar with roadmaps and directions, and let friends and family know your route and your estimated arrival time. Finally, make sure to pack food and water for the trip.

Slow Down During Inclement Weather

While safe driving is a year-round habit, winter driving requires extra attention. Drive more slowly when there is snow and ice on the roadway because it is more difficult to control your vehicle on slick surfaces. Put more distance between your car and the car in front of you so that you will have plenty of time to stop. Also, give yourself some extra time to arrive at your destination if you are traveling when road conditions require you to reduce your speed.

Winter Driving Requires Special Attention

  • Always buckle up
  • Don’t be a distracted driver.
  • Focus on the road
  • Slow down
  • Don’t drink and drive
  • Children should ride in age-appropriate and size-appropriate car seats.

Stay Safe When Driving This Winter

Winter is finally upon us, and the snow is about to fly. Driving during the winter months can be especially hazardous in the Rocky Mountain region when our roads and highways are covered in ice and snow. Winter is the season to be extra careful, and your focus on safe driving will help protect you, your passengers, and those with whom you are sharing the road.
