Burg Simpson is Pleased to Announce the Denver Firefighters Scholarship Fund and the 2019 Denver Fire Scholarship Awards

The Denver Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation, in partnership with the Denver Fire Department Foundation and Shareholder Nick Fogel with Burg Simpson law firm, is pleased to have recently established the inaugural Denver Fire Scholarship awards. The organizations will award two $1,500 scholarships to two qualifying students who are children of an active Denver firefighter.

The Burg Simpson law firm and the Denver Fire Department Foundation have generously funded one of the two inaugural scholarships encourage our member’s children to pursue higher education. It is a privilege for the Denver Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation, the Denver Fire Department Foundation, and Burg Simpson work together to represent the interests of our Denver firefighters and their families. This scholarship program grows out of our interest in giving back to this community


 Two $1500 scholarships will be awarded to two selected finalists and can be used to pay the cost of tuition, fees, books, meal plans, or housing. An independent committee made up of members outside the fire service will choose the winners!


 The competition is open to high school seniors, and those who intend to or are currently enrolled in an accredited 2 or 4-year technical college, college, or university.

  • The students must also have a parent who is an active member of the Denver Fire Dept.

(Children of current Board Members of the Denver Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation and Denver Fire Department Foundation are not eligible.)


 Entrants of the competition must write an original essay of 750 words that describes one of the following 3 topics:

  1. Describe how you have demonstrated leadership ability both in and out of school.
  2. Describe your most meaningful achievements and how they relate to your field of study.
  3. Pick an experience from your own life and explain how it has influenced your development and your educational goals.


Essays must be original work, and any sources used must be properly cited and included in the Bibliography/Works Cited. Essays cannot be more than 750 words. Citations and Bibliography are not included in the word count.


  •  The 2 winners will be notified on approximately February 15, 2019.
  • The winner will be selected by an independent selection committee and will be recognized during the 2019 Local 858 Firefighter Awards Ceremony, February 23, 2019.
  • The decisions of the independent selection committee are final.
  • All essays submitted become the property of Denver Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation and Denver Fire Department Foundation and Burg Simpson.
  • By entering the scholarship competition, winners agree to allow Denver Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation and Denver Fire Department Foundation and Burg Simpson the right to publish the entrant’s name, photograph images, all personal and other information (including general locations) for the purpose of Burg Simpson, Denver Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation and Denver Fire Department Foundation, and the competition’s publicity, promotion, and news (including use in broadcast media, printed publications, editorial and PR activities, and online).
  • The selection committee may interview applicants.
  • Disbursement of this scholarship is awarded based upon proof of registration sent to the Denver Fire Scholarship committee.
  • One half of scholarship monies will be awarded for the first semester and the concluding second half for the second semester (with a minimum 2.5 grade point average.)


 Essay submissions for the 2019 scholarship contest will be accepted beginning on January 10, 2019, and the deadline is on February 8, 2019. Applications received after that date will not be considered.
