December 10th is the 70th Anniversary of Human Rights Day
December 10th is Human Rights Day, a date that is celebrated annually across the globe. Human Rights Day honors the United Nations adoption and proclamation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR); the first global enunciation of human rights and one of the early major achievements of the new United Nations.
As we have all witnessed a rising level of intolerance and violence throughout the world, the observance of Human Rights Day is a reminder to all of us that whenever humanity’s values are abandoned, we are all at higher risk. The UDHR is as relevant today as it was when the United Nations ratified it on December 10, 1948.
Eleanor Roosevelt, former First Lady of the United States from 1933 to 1945, led the U.N. committee to develop the first universal human rights document to serve the world. Mrs. Roosevelt and the committee worked with men and women from diverse legal and cultural backgrounds from across the globe to create a document that proclaimed that there are certain inalienable rights to which all human beings are entitled — regardless of their status, which includes race, color, religion, sex, language, political or another opinion, national or social origin, property, or birth.
The UDHR was established to empower all of the citizens of the world to stand up for our rights and the rights of others.
Preamble of the UDHR:
- Article 1: Innate freedom and equality.
- Article 2: Ban on discrimination.
- Article 3: Right to life.
- Article 4: Ban on slavery.
- Article 5: Ban on torture.
- Article 6: Right to recognition as a person before the law.
- Article 7: Equality before the law.
Today the general consent of all United Nations Member States on the basic Human Rights laid down in the Declaration makes it even stronger and emphasizes the relevance of Human Rights in our daily lives. December 10th is the 70th Anniversary of Human Rights Day. It is a day to honor and to remember.
