After a Fire, Part 1: Insurance Company Obligations

The first thing you need to know after a house fire is that insurance companies are obligated by law to treat you honestly and fairly, to pay what they owe in a timely manner. And you should not have to be dragged through broken glass to get them to do it.

You should ask the adjuster to explain all of the coverages available under your policy – what they need from you. Be very, very clear with them about what it is they need from you in order to be able to adjust your claim.

Don’t be afraid to ask your adjuster for a timeline on when to expect payments back from them, when to expect them to get back to you with regard to any question that you may have.
