Burg Simpson Presents “Residential Construction Defect Law Update”

Burg Simpson attorneys Ron Sandgrund and Leslie Tuft presented a three and a half  hour continuing legal education seminar on August 25 called “Residential Construction Defect Law Update 2021.” Lawyers attending the seminar were given a copy of the 7th edition of Mr. Sandgrund and Ms. Tuft’s award-winning book, Residential Construction Law in Colorado (2021). The seminar was designed for Colorado attorneys who regularly handle home defect cases and is considered by many a “can’t miss” event in their continuing legal education.

In addition to updating Colorado lawyers on this ever-evolving area of the law, this bi-annual seminar seeks to help lawyers understand where future court decisions may be heading, provide practical advice on how to successfully manage construction defect cases, and offer insights drawn from Mr. Sandgrund and Ms. Tuft’s combined construction defect practices spanning more than 30 years. No other book examines Colorado defect law in the kind of depth as their book does. The book is filled with common sense “practice pointers” for both new and experienced lawyers enmeshed in litigation with the residential development and homebuilding industry.

Mr. Sandgrund and Ms. Tuft are often involved in helping write Burg Simpson’s appellate briefs relating to defect claims and insurance coverage issues. They recently gained a significant victory for homeowners in the 2021 case Bolt Factory Lofts Owners Ass’n v. Auto-Owners Ins. Co. (2021 COA 32), defeating a contractor’s liability insurer’s attempt to interfere with a $2.4 settlement reached between a homeowner association and the negligent contractor.

Mr. Sandgrund has also served as an adjunct professor at the University of Colorado Law School and sits on the Colorado Supreme Court Civil Jury Instruction Committee. Mr. Sandgrund (often with Ms. Tuft as his co-author) has had over 65 articles published in the Colorado Bar Journal (The Colorado Lawyer), many examining Colorado’s Construction Defect Action Reform Act and the many insurance issues that arise relating to construction defect claims.  Most of their articles can be accessed through Mr. Sandgrund’s biography page on this website under the heading Publications and Media.
