DePuy ASR® Recall
In 2010, DePuy initiated the streps to withdraw the ASR® device after reports published in the UK revealed that between 12 to 13 percent of patients receiving the ASR® Hip Resurfacing System and/or the ASR® XL Acetabular System would need corrective surgery within five years – a rate twice as high as the industry average. According to DePuy, evidence suggests that the risk of revision surgery is higher in female patients and recipients of devices with a head size of less than 50 mm in diameter.
Concerns surrounding the quality of the ASR® Hip Resurfacing System and ASR® XL Acetabular System first came to light several years prior, after it emerged that an increasing number of patients fitted with these implants were forced to undergo painful and expensive surgeries after their devices failed. According to reports, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received more than 400 complaints about these devices since the beginning of 2008.
