Burg Simpson is Investigating Claims of Women Who Developed Uterine Cancer After Regular Use of Hair Straightening Products.
According to an alarming new study, women who regularly use chemical hair straighteners are 155% more likely to be diagnosed with uterine cancer than women who never used such products. The study from the US National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), defined regular users as those women that used hair straighteners more than four times in a year. Researchers with NIEHS stated, “These findings are the first epidemiologic evidence of association between use of straightening products and uterine cancer.”
Connecting Hair Straightening Products to Uterine Cancer
Many hair straighteners contain chemicals such as formaldehyde, parabens, and phthalates. These chemicals are considered “endocrine disrupters.” Endocrine disrupters are chemicals that may mimic or interfere with the body’s hormones. Past research has indicated that frequent exposure to endocrine disruptors is associated with an increased risk of developing certain types of cancers, including uterine cancer. This further supports the NIEHS findings of uterine cancer being linked to hair straighteners that contain endocrine disruptor chemicals.
At present, we are unaware of any hair straightener manufacturer warning of the uterine cancer risk associated with their products.
Lawsuits Against Hair Straightener Manufacturers
Following the release of the NIEHS study, popular hair straighter manufacturers such as L’Oreal, SoftSheen Carson, Strength of Nature Global, and Revlon, have been sued by consumers alleging they have developed cancer as a result of using their hair straightener products. We expect many more lawsuits will be filed in the coming months.
