University of Denver Profiles Michael S. Burg

The University of Denver’s Sturm College of Law profiled one of its more famous alumni, Burg Simpson founding shareholder Michael S. Burg.

Michael, who earned his JD from Sturm in 1975, also was inducted into the Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame just last year. He’s the first DU grad to earn the honor.

Michael discussed the meandering path his career took – from acting gigs to stand-up comedy – on his way to the 40 years of success he has enjoyed at Burg Simpson. He also offered some words of wisdom for tomorrow’s lawyers.

“You have to have great respect for our democracy. You have to have ethics. You have to have integrity. It is crucial in life and law. You can never fool the jury. You can’t fool them,” Michael explains. “No ego, no fear, and it’s important that you not take yourself too seriously.”

Over the course of his career, Michael has argued cases in nearly 200 trials and secured more than 15 verdicts in excess of $1 million. Overall, his clients have received settlements, judgments, and verdicts in excess of $500 million.
