4 Dead and 9 Injured in Fiery Crash on Red Mountain Freeway
Four people died and nine others were hospitalized following a fiery crash that closed Loop 202 on the Red Mountain Freeway on Wednesday, June 9 shortly after 10 pm.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the incident occurred in the eastbound lanes at 52nd Street when a semi-truck hauling a tanker of milk failed to slow down for congested traffic and hit several vehicles before it burst into flames. The tanker was separated from the semi-truck and careened over the concrete barrier median into the westbound traffic lanes. A total of eight vehicles were involved in the deadly collision
Fire department officials said four individuals were pronounced dead at the scene and paramedics transported nine other victims to nearby hospitals. Six of the patients suffered critical injuries, and the other three had non-life-threatening injuries. A tenth person was examined at the scene of the crash but chose not to go to the hospital. Multiple ambulances and fire trucks from Phoenix, Scottsdale, Tempe, and Mesa responded to the scene of the crash.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the tanker failed to slow for traffic congestion. The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending nine investigators to conduct a safety probe into the crash in cooperation with the Arizona public safety department.
