Blame that Accident on ADHD

Studies show that children, teens, and adults with ADHD are twice as likely to have an accident of some kind as the general population. This statistic refers to any incident that causes injury requiring medical attention, including car accidents, falls, slip and falls, sporting injuries, etc.

ADHD is a neurological disorder caused by impairment in the control center of the brain. Children and adults with ADHD have trouble with attention, physical control, impulsivity, and certain sensitivities. There is evidence that ADHD medication does mitigate some of the conditions that result in more accidents and injuries than is the norm, but some people respond poorly to these medications or are not able to tolerate the side effects.

In an effort to reduce the rate of car accidents in teens and adults with ADHD, the following strategies might be helpful:

  • Keep distractions to a minimum — avoid playing loud music or engaging in excessive conversation with passengers; avoid using a cellphone, either hand-held or on speaker;
  • Avoid an overfull vehicle — carpooling with a bunch of noisy passengers can be extremely dangerous.
  • Plan your route in advance — to avoid being distracted by GPS settings, street signs or confusing directions, have the route in mind before setting out;
  • Minimize multitasking — driving already demands a great deal of multitasking, such as signaling, checking mirrors, applying gas, brakes, shifting and monitoring speed. Avoid eating, applying makeup, or any other unnecessary task while driving;

Drivers who are particularly distractible should avoid using things like cruise control, Bluetooth audio, and auto-pilot features. These allow the driver’s attention to be diverted to other activities, and this can have disastrous results when combined with an attention deficit driver.

All drivers are reminded that it is illegal to send or receive texts while driving, or to operate a hand-held device anytime other than in an emergency situation. Keep our roads safer by reducing distractions while behind the wheel.
