Potential Home Elevator Injuries / Deaths of Children Prompts Recalls, Consumer Product Safety Commission Action
Since July 2021, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (“CPSC”) has been warning consumers about a potentially deadly hazard of some residential elevators. In some home elevators, children become trapped in the gap that exists between the exterior landing door and the interior elevator cab door, putting children at risk of being crushed or seriously injured when the elevator car moves.

In a post dated July 20, 2021, CPSC stated, “Children, some as young as two, and as old as 12, have been crushed to death in this gap, suffering multiple skull fractures, fractured vertebrae and traumatic asphyxia. Other children have suffered devastating and lifelong injuries.” CPSC’s comments came on the heels of a lawsuit it filed against Thyssenkrupp Access Corporation alleging that some of its elevators were defective due to the gap between the landing and elevator cab door.
Several companies have recalled their home elevators due to the risk to children. For example, on December 17, 2020, Otis Elevator Company recalled its home elevators due to risk of injury and death to children. The most recent recalls were issued January 11, 2022 by Bella Elevator, LLC, Inclinator Company of America, and Savaria Corporation. Together these recalls affect nearly 70,000 home elevators which were sold under the names of Bella, Inclinator, Savaria, and Garaventa home elevators.
