Stryker Rejuvenate Hip Replacements

Defective Medical Device Lawyers Serving Denver & All of Colorado

Burg Simpson is currently investigating reported problems with a number of Stryker metal-on-metal hip implants, following the manufacturer’s decision to voluntarily recall its Rejuvenate Modular and ABG II replacement hip systems.

Concern is growing due to the potential risks associated with the modular-neck stem portions of these devices. Clinical evidence suggests that components used in the Rejuvenate Modular and ABG II systems may be prone to fretting or corrosion at the modular neck junction, and subsequently may be dangerous to patients.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently revealed that hundreds of individuals across America have experienced pain, swelling, and tissue sensitivity following surgery with a Stryker hip replacement. In one particular case, a patient fitted with an ABG II Modular short neck was required to undergo corrective surgery due to extreme levels of pain and discomfort.

METAL-ON-METAL HIP REPLACEMENTS

The safety of metal-on-metal hips has been the subject of much debate recently; in particular the potential for these devices to release harmful metal fragments and ions into a patient’s body and blood stream.

Interestingly, the recalled Stryker hip systems have been associated with many of the same problems occurring with other metal-on-metal hip devices. However, most of the problems with metal-on-metal implants originate in the region of the femoral head and acetabular cup, whereas the problems associated with the Stryker hip replacement are being found at the metal-on-metal junction between the femoral stem and femoral neck. In other words, the potential for corrosion of the metal-on-metal components is more likely to occur farther down (i.e., closer to the femoral stem) on the Stryker hip device than with some of the other metal-on-metal hip devices currently linked to the same corrosion issues.
