Glenwood Springs Anesthesiologist Dr. Mark R. Young Accused of Assaulting Women Who Received Ketamine Treatment at APEX Ketamine Therapy

Dr. Mark Rollin Young, the owner of APEX Ketamine Therapy (doing business as APEX Health Alliance and APEX Mobile Anesthesia Sedation Services), had his medical license suspended in 2023. APEX Ketamine Therapy is now permanently closed.

Numerous female patients of Dr. Mark Rollin Young have accused him of sexually assaulting them while receiving ketamine treatment administered by Dr. Mark R. Young at his Glenwood Springs medical office. Burg Simpson has been retained as legal counsel, and it is our mission to let other potential survivors know that they are not alone—and fight for the justice they deserve.

Sexual assault is a devastating experience, particularly when it is perpetrated by a doctor or other trusted professional. We trust our doctors to care for us. Sometimes their behavior may make us uncomfortable, but we excuse it away because of their position of authority.

Who Is Dr. Mark Rollin Young?

Dr. Mark R. Young is a board-certified anesthesiologist. Prior to opening APEX Ketamine Therapy in 2019, he previously worked as an anesthesiologist at Valley View Hospital. Dr. Young was also previously affiliated with Glenwood Oral Surgery.

A records search reveals that Dr. Mark Rollin Young was previously disciplined by the Colorado Medical Board in 2012 for an undisclosed infraction. As of April 2023, his license to practice medicine in Colorado is subject to summary suspension:

“When the State Licensing Authority has reasonable grounds to believe and finds that a Licensee has been guilty of a deliberate and willful violation of any applicable law or regulation or that the public health, safety, or welfare imperatively requires emergency action it shall serve upon the Licensee a Summary Suspension Order that temporarily or summarily suspends the license.”

Alerting Patients of APEX Ketamine Therapy

Until it was closed in December 2023, APEX Ketamine Therapy (also known as APEX Health Alliance) provided ketamine infusion therapy for a range of conditions:

  • Anxiety
  • Chronic Pain
  • Complex Regional Pain Syndrome
  • Depression
  • Migraines
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
  • Suicidal Ideation

During infusion therapy, the anesthetic drug ketamine is administered intravenously. Patients who receive IV ketamine infusion report feelings of relaxation. As the treatment progresses, patients may experience a sense of separation or disassociation from their surroundings and even their own minds and bodies.

The National Institutes of Health report that the side effects of ketamine infusion therapy are generally mild and brief. Patients often feel “strange or loopy” for one to two hours following treatment, with some experiencing additional side effects such as headaches, fatigue, and alterations in perception.

Dr. Mark Rollin Young told at least one of his patients that hallucinations and even feelings of being attacked may occur with ketamine infusion therapy. These are extreme and uncommon side effects. We encourage any patient of APEX Ketamine Therapy who was provided this same information to come forward.

We have also been notified that Dr. Young administered the ketamine infusion treatment without a female nurse or other personnel present. Exaggerations about the effects of the drug, as well as the lack of supervision, suggest that Dr. Mark Rollin Young may have used ketamine as a means to subdue female patients under his care and sexually assault them when they were in a vulnerable state.

The wrongful use of anesthesia puts patients in danger, and medical professionals need to be held accountable for the resulting harm. In addition to investigating the accusations of sexual assault against Dr. Mark R. Young, the lawyers at Burg Simpson are working to determine whether he intentionally administered ketamine inappropriately.
