When you hear “J&J” today, you probably think of hygiene products or the COVID-19 vaccine it developed. A recent recall deals with a different J&J – J&J Distributing – based in St. Paul, Minnesota. J&J Distributing recently recalled various food products in hopes of preventing a foodborne illness outbreak.

On March 1, 2021, the FDA announced that J&J Distributing is recalling various taco products after testing revealed the presence of contamination in a utensil used in the food preparation and packaging process. That same day, the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) identified additional ready-to-eat salad products to be pulled from shelves. Eating food contaminated by Listeria can cause listeriosis, an invasive infection that can turn fatal. The infection is most likely to have a significant effect in young children, the elderly, and others with weakened immune systems. Further, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant woman.

The affected products were distributed nationwide and can commonly be found at local grocery and convenience stores. The recalls include brand name products such as Haug, Fresh Thyme, Tastebuds, Caribou, and Kwik Trip. A full list of affected products and pictures of their labels can be found in the FDA and FSIS recall announcements.

Although no adverse events have been confirmed to this point, the recalls warn that eating the contaminated products could cause serious and fatal infections that may require medical intervention. The infections could even be life-threatening to certain individuals.

The recalls urge consumers who have purchased the affected products to return them to the retailer for a full refund. However, it does not appear that remedies are being offered to individuals who ate the products and got sick. Burg Simpson is currently investigating remedies for these individuals.
