Thyroid Medication Recalled Due to Sub-Potency
On August 24, 2020, RCL Labs, Inc. recalled 483 lots of Nature-Throid ® and WP Thyroid ® after testing revealed certain lots were sub-potent. According to a recall announcement posted by the FDA, certain lots contained less than 87 percent of the labeled amount of active ingredients. Patients being treated with sub-potent Nature-Throid® or WP Thyroid® may experience signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism. These symptoms may include slow heart rate, depression, fatigue, constipation and increased sensitivity to cold. In pregnant women, hypothyroidism can lead to early miscarriage, fetal hyperthyroidism, and/or fetal malformations. Additionally, elderly patients and patients with cardiac disease who ingest the recalled lots of Nature-Throid® and WP Thyroid® may experience cardiac pain, palpitations or cardiac arrhythmia.
The recalled lots were distributed nationwide to wholesalers, retail pharmacies and healthcare professionals. To identify if your medication could be part of this recall, review this list of recalled lots. However, the recall notice states that patients who have the recalled product should not stop taking the medication. Patients should contact their health care provider for further guidance and/or a replacement prescription.
