Acella Pharmaceuticals is recalling 13 lots of NP Thyroid ® – a drug used to treat hypothyroidism – for being “super potent.” According to the recall announcement posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the affected lots of NP Thyroid ® contain up to 115 percent of one of the drug’s active ingredients. Patients who ingest super potent doses of NP Thyroid ® may experience chest pain, rapid heart rate, heart rhythm disturbances, weight loss, heat intolerance, fatigue, muscle weakness, and hypertension. Additionally, super potent NP Thyroid ® may cause miscarriage or impaired fetal development when taken by pregnant women. As of May 22, Acella Pharmaceuticals had received at least two reports of injuries associated with super potent NP Thyroid ®.

According to the recall notice, Acella is notifying wholesalers by email and phone to discontinue distribution of the recalled lots. However, the recall notice states that patients who have the recalled product should not stop taking the medication, but rather contact their health care provider for further guidance and/or a replacement prescription before stopping.
