Types of Theft in Wyoming

  • Larceny – The unlawful taking, carrying, leading, or riding away of property from the possession or constructive possession of another.   • Motor Vehicle Theft – The theft or attempted theft of a motor vehicle. A motor vehicle is self-propelled and runs on the surface and not on rails. Specifically excluded from this category are motorboats, construction equipment, airplanes, and farming equipment.
  • Embezzlement – Misappropriation or misapplication of money or property entrusted to one’s care, custody, or control.
  • Stolen Property (buying, receiving, possession) – Buying, receiving, and/or possessing stolen property.

The criminal penalties for larceny in Wyoming are based on the value of the stolen property. If the theft involves something valued at less than $1,000, it is considered a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment of no more than six months and a fine of up to $750. However, if the theft involves property worth more than $1,000, it is upgraded to a felony, punishable imprisonment up to 10 years, and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
