Heart Attack – Denver Medical Malpractice Lawyers

As medical research advances and new drugs such as ‘clot-busting’ thrombolytic drugs become more readily available, heart attacks – or myocardial infarctions – are more treatable than ever before.

However, time is of the essence when diagnosing and treating attacks. The briefest of delays can result in irreversible damage to the heart muscle. Unfortunately, doctors and other medical professionals sometimes fail to recognize the symptoms and risk factors in their patients. And in some cases, medical professionals incorrectly diagnose a heart attack as something else. In many of these cases, the patients will suffer permanent damage, and even death, as a result of undiagnosed heart attacks.

If you have suffered further injury because of a heart attack your medical provider did not diagnose quickly enough, or incorrectly, do not wait. Contact a Denver medical injury lawyer at Burg Simpson by calling 303-792-5595 or fill out our Free Case Evaluation Form as soon as possible.

If you experience any of the following symptoms of a heart attack, you need to seek emergency medical help immediately. The sooner a heart attack is diagnosed, the better the prognosis for recovery:

  • Chest pain or other discomfort. This can feel like pressure, squeezing, fullness, or pain in the center of the chest.
  • Other upper body discomfort. Many heart attack victims suffer pain or other discomfort in one or both arms, the back, jaw, neck, and/or stomach.
  • Shortness of breath. Many patients experience shortness of breath during a heart attack, either accompanying chest pain, or alone.
  • Nausea. Many people, particularly women and the elderly, experience feelings of nausea during a heart attack.
  • Lightheadedness, which may include fainting.
  • Breaking into a cold sweat.
  • Excessive fatigue, particularly in women.

Call the Colorado medical injury attorneys at 303-792-5595 if you or someone you love has suffered a heart attack that was misdiagnosed by your doctor.

According to the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, there are a handful of immediate treatments that can make all the difference if administered quickly, such as:

  • Aspirin to prevent further blood clotting.
  • Nitroglycerin to reduce the heart’s workload and improve blood flow.
  • Oxygen therapy.

The most effective follow-up treatments include:

  • Clot-busting medicines – These are used to dissolve blood clots blocking the coronary arteries. These should be administered within several hours of the start of heart attack symptoms.
  • Percutaneous coronary intervention – This is a nonsurgical procedure that opens blocked or clogged coronary arteries, according to NHLBI. A balloon attached to a catheter is threaded through a blood vessel to the affected area. Once in place, doctors inflate the balloon to restore blood flow. Additionally, the doctor will sometimes install put a stent in the artery, which helps prevents further blockages.

Call the Colorado Medical Lawsuit Attorneys for Help

The first step for anyone experiencing these or other symptoms of a heart attack is to seek emergency medical help immediately. The sooner a heart attack is diagnosed, the better the prognosis for recovery.
