Philips Respironics Recalls some V60 and V60 Plus Ventilators due to Risk of Reduced Oxygen
Following reports of 25 injuries, Philips Respironics is recalling its V60 Plus ventilators and all V60 ventilators upgraded to enable High Flow Therapy (software versions 3.00 and 3.10). High Flow Therapy is used to provide patients breathing assistance. It provides heated, humidified, and higher flow nasal oxygen at higher oxygen concentrations than typical oxygen therapy.
According to the recall notice, the V60 Plus ventilators and all V60 ventilators upgraded to enable High Flow Therapy are being recalled due to problems with the oxygen flow rate. If the oxygen flow is partially blocked for any reason, the ventilator will provide a lower oxygen flow rate than intended and will issue a “low priority” alarm. If a medical provider does not remove the obstruction, the lower flow rate could result in a patient’s oxygen level dropping to the point of serious injury or death.
Philips Respironics has sent an “Urgent Field Safety Notice” to all affected customers advising that the patient’s oxygen saturation should be continuously monitored when using the recalled ventilators to prevent dangerous drops in blood oxygen levels, respiratory distress, and resulting escalation in medical treatment. Further, Philips Respironics has advised medical providers to respond to all alarms on the effected devices urgently, regardless of the alarm priority.
According to the recall, 16,565 ventilators are affected by this recall and they were distributed between May 1, 2009 and June 2, 2021. For more information regarding this recall, click here.
