Sundial Reprimanded for Claiming its Herbal Products Can Assist in Disease Prevention and Treatment

An increased focus on health and safety has been a positive development during the current pandemic, and products designed to assist with wellness, personal hygiene, and cleaning have flown off of the shelves. However, people need to remain vigilant as to what they are putting in to their bodies. Recently, the FDA announced that Sundial Herbal Products is immediately recalling all of its products featuring claims that they can diagnose, cure, mitigate, treat, or prevent disease. Alarmingly, the FDA reports that these products are unapproved drugs that have not been established as safe and effective for disease and ailments. The recalled Sundial products include herbs, teas, leaves, spices, oils, and nuts.

A full list of the recalled products can be found on the FDA’s announcement page.

This is just the latest in Sundial’s growing history of violating the law. Back in 2013, the FDA issued a warning letter to the company alleging “significant violations” after inspecting Sundial’s facility located in the Bronx. The violations alleged are similar to those in the recent recall, as Sundial was found to have unapproved and unregulated products labeled to cure, treat, or prevent a variety of diseases including syphilis, cancer, and HIV/AIDS. On May 27, 2020, a federal judge ordered Rahsan Hakim and Adoniiah Rahsan, the two individuals behind the Sundial Herbal Products operation, to stop distributing unapproved new drugs and misbranded drugs until they comply with federal law.
