Types of Theft

There are many kinds of theft that are criminal offenses, including:

Robbery – The taking or attempt to take anything of value from the care, custody, or control of a person or persons by force, or threat of force, or violence, by putting the victim in fear.

Embezzlement – Misappropriation or misapplication of money or property entrusted to one’s care, custody, or control.
Stolen Property (buying, receiving, possession) – Buying, receiving, and/or possessing stolen property.

The criminal penalties for larceny are based on the value of the stolen property. If the theft involves something valued at less than $1,000, it is considered a misdemeanor punishable by imprisonment of no more than six months and a fine of up to $750. However, if the theft involves property worth more than $1,000, it is upgraded to a felony, punishable imprisonment up to 10 years, and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
