Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh & Jardine Pays Tribute to Judge Wiley Y. Daniel

Judge Wiley Y. Daniel, the former chief judge for the U.S. District Court of Colorado and one of the city’s pioneering black judges, died suddenly Friday afternoon from heart failure. He was 72 years old.

In 1992, Daniel became the first, and only black president of the Colorado Bar Association and three years later, President Bill Clinton appointed Daniel to the U.S. District Court for Colorado, becoming the first African-American federal judge in the state.

Among his many contributions, Judge Daniel will be remembered for his commitment to racial and gender diversity in the judiciary and making more opportunities for attorneys of color in Colorado.

Michael S. Burg, the firm’s founder said, “Judge Daniel’s long and distinguished career opened doors to help diversify the courts and to provide inspirational leadership to generations of judges and lawyers. He will be missed.”
