December 5, 2018

This morning, former Senator Alan K. Simpson (R-WY) celebrated the life of former President George H.W. Bush, his long-time friend and colleague. Speaking of the man’s warmth and integrity, Sen. Simpson delivered a moving speech on President Bush’s legacy of integrity, loyalty and sacrifice.

When speaking to the press, Alan Simpson spoke on the difficulties of fitting a 60-year friendship into a 10-minute speech. “[Y]ou can’t even begin to delve in on those things. There’s no room for that. You just delve in on the things that mean something to you deeply and personally, and try to keep it light.” He did so effectively in his moving eulogy, with tremendous warmth, grace and humor.

Despite his composure during the speech, the former Senator wasn’t without his own personal loss. Of writing the speech, he said, “You cry while you’re preparing it so you won’t cry while you’re giving it.”
