Nowhere is the talent of the Burg Simpson Team more evident than in the work done for Kaps for Kendall. A grass roots charity, Kaps for Kendall was started in 2004 by Allison and Whitney Atkinson. Their sister, Kendall Atkinson, was afflicted with Fanconi anemia, a rare genetic blood disorder. Kendall was afraid of losing her hair when she faced a bone marrow transplant, so she taught herself to knit colorful hats.
When Kendall died following complications of the transplant, her sisters founded the Kaps for Kendall charity and continued making the hats. Others soon joined in their endeavors. Today, these hats are sent to treatment centers around the country and provided for patients who are undergoing medical treatment that causes hair loss.
Proud to Support Kaps for Kendall
Over the past six years, Burg Simpson has donated well over 500 hats to this charity, each of them knit by hand by a Burg Simpson knitter. Each hat is paired with a sponsor, who pays $25.00 to have a hat made and donated in his or her name. All the money raised through the sponsorships are donated to the Fanconi Anemia Research Foundation. When the hat drive begins each year, the completed hats are displayed in Burg Simpson’s front entryway. They are then turned in at the Annual Knit Away F.A. Knit-In for Kaps for Kendall, at which knitters from around the state of Colorado are invited to come together to knit hats for the entire day.
Last year’s Knit-In, sponsored by Burg Simpson, resulted in over 400 hats being collected AND raised $9,000 for Fanconi anemia research. To find out more about this year’s event, or to get involved go to their Facebook page.
