The Colorado Lawyer Publishes David P. Hersh’s Recent Article on Attorney Well-Being

Burg Simpson shareholder David P Hersh was appointed by Associate Justice Monica Marquez to serve on the Colorado Supreme Court Task Force on Lawyer Well-being in 2018. Among other significant findings, the Task Force, which is chaired by Justice Marquez, found that too many lawyers and law students experience chronic stress and high rates of depression and substance use. The Colorado Task Force is made up of lawyers from private practice, university personnel, judges, and members of area bar associations. Dave Hersh is the chair of the Arapahoe County Bar Association Committee on Lawyer Well-being that was created at his suggestion.

Both of these committees were established to assist lawyers who have problems related to substance abuse and addiction, mental health issues such as depression and anxiety, and work/life balance issues. Committee members assist lawyers with finding resources available to them (such as COLAP – the Colorado Lawyer Assistance Program) and further the public dialogue about these issues in order to “destigmatize” them. It is the goal of these committees to bring awareness to the entire legal community about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, especially now in the wake of the pandemic.

Dave offers his time (as well as his experience, strength, and hope) on these committees because he knows just how difficult it can be to practice law and deal with well-being issues.  He is well-known for his commitment to staying healthy and fit, an essential component for many lawyers seeking well-being. Dave is famous (some would say notorious) among his colleagues for his century bicycle rides to support various charitable organizations. Among other charity rides, Dave has led Burg Simpson’s Pedal for Possible team on its annual ride that benefits Craig Rehabilitation Hospital.

The Colorado Lawyer just published Dave’s recent article about the importance of attorney wellbeing in the April 2021 issue!
