Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh & Jardine, P.C. is pleased to support the Colorado High School Mock Trial Tournament at both the regional and statewide levels. For the seventeenth consecutive year, shareholder, Diane Vaksdal Smith will be volunteering her time to act as a presiding judge at the tournament finals, which take place March 8 – 9 , at the Larimer County Justice Center in Ft. Collins, Colorado.
Each year more than 100 high school teams participates in Colorado’s mock trial program, and teams are composed of 6–12 students who perform a case for the Prosecution/Plaintiff and/or the Defense in either a civil or criminal-type trial. Winners at the state level will continue on to compete at the national level.
Diane Vaksdal Smith, herself a former Magistrate Judge for Colorado’s Seventeenth Judicial District and an award winning employment law attorney, said, “ I am thrilled to participate again this year. It is hard to believe that I have been doing this for more than seventeen years. Each year this competition provides students a wonderful opportunity not only to learn about the importance of our civil and criminal justice system, but also to develop their written and oral communication skills. I am continually impressed at the level of enthusiasm, skill and dedication show by all of the kids as well as the coaches and family members who support them.” Support for the Mock Trial program is now a generational commitment: Diane’s son, Cooper (a sophomore at Fort Lewis College), is also volunteering for a third year in a row.
