Burg Simpson is pleased to announce the winner of the inaugural Burg Simpson Law Firm Denver Police Officer Foundation Scholarship. Lauren Horowitz won the essay competition with her essay, “Why We Honor the Men and Women in Blue,” taking home a $1,500 scholarship.
The competition, conducted in partnership with the Denver Police Officers Foundation, was open to all high school seniors with at least one parent on the Denver police force. Competitors were to write about the role of police officers and their relationship with their communities.
“I’m very thankful and happy that I won this,” Lauren said after receiving the scholarship check. “It’s really personal to me, and I just have a big heart for what my stepfather does. He’s a real role model.”
Lauren, who’s been fascinated with her stepfather’s dinnertime tales of police service for years, explained that today’s police officers are nothing short of superheroes. Lauren, who’s now a freshman at Metro State University of Denver, intends to carry on the family tradition of helping others. She’s studying recreational therapy with an eye toward working with special needs kids.
The Denver Police Officers Foundation, founded in 1999, has helped more than 600 officers and their families over the years. The nonprofit, funded by city payroll deductions, donations, and fundraising efforts, has also been able to provide emergency financial help and long-term assistance for families.
Shareholder Nick D. Fogel and his father, Senior Counsel Marshall Fogel, have both been fierce champions of first responder support organizations such as this. Marshall sits on the board of directors of the Denver Police Officers Foundation. Nick also sits on the boards of both the Jeremy Bitner Fallen Officer Fund and the Denver Firefighter Foundation.
After the scholarship ceremony, Lt. Ken Chavez, President of the foundation, honored Burg Simpson and Marshall with plaques of their own, thanking them for their friendship, advocacy, and decades of support for the law enforcement community.
