Attorneys Investigating Claims by Cancer Patients Who Took the Weight-Loss Drug Belviq
Burg Simpson’s mass tort attorneys are now investigating claims by patients diagnosed with cancer after taking the appetite-reducing drug Belviq (lorcaserin) as prescribed by physicians. Last year, the FDA recalled Belviq after a multi-year analysis determined that patients who took the drug had an elevated risk of cancer. Following the research, the FDA stated that “the risks of lorcaserin outweigh its benefits.”
Cancer Patients Filing Claims Against Belviq’s Manufacturer
Patients who developed cancer after taking Belviq or Belviq XR are filing legal claims across the United States against the drug’s manufacturer. Belviq was developed by Arena Pharmaceuticals and later produced by Eisai Inc. Patients claim that the manufacturer was more concerned about profits than patient safety and negligently marketed a dangerous drug before performing the necessary safety testing. Patients also claim that the company failed to warn physicians and patients about the cancer risks posed by Belviq. Plaintiffs have stated that had they been made aware of the potential risks associated with the Belviq, they would not have taken the drug.
