Celebrating the beginning of a new year is a tradition that many people enjoy by being out on the town and enjoying the company of friends and family. So when you are out and about this New Year’s eve and are celebrating the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019, make sure that you are watching out for other drivers who may have had too much fun and way too much to drink. Have a happy new year, drive safely, and watch out for the other guy!

Losses Due to Alcohol Related Accidents

In 2016, the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported that an estimated 29 people die every day in alcohol-related vehicle accidents, and alcohol related crashes result in financial  losses in excess of $44 billion per year.

Many Holiday Accidents Due to Alcohol Abuse

  • The U.S. National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) statistics show that drunk driving on December 31 and January 1 is still a significant problem in our country. The report shows that over 40% of traffic-related deaths during Christmas and New Year’s involve a drunk driver. This figure is a 12% increase over the rest of the month of December.
  • According to SafeAuto.com, compared to an average weekend night, there are 71% more alcohol related crashes that occur with drugs or alcohol as a contributing factor between 6 pm on December 31st and 6 am on January 1st.

Spreading the Message

Fortunately, however, incidents involving drunk driving and drunk driving accidents have decreased by over 30% in the last 3 decades.  The “Don’t Drink and Drive” message has become ubiquitous  in recent years, and governments, public safety organizations, parents and students all have been working together to inform the public of the dangers of drinking and driving.

One of the most pervasive and memorable public service messages about drunk driving first aired in 1983 by the National Ad Council: “Friends Don’t Let Friends Drive Drunk”. Since the program was launched more than 35 years ago, almost 70% of Americans surveyed reported that they have attempted to keep someone from drinking and driving.
