Former U.S. Senator Al Simpson Awarded with Presidential Medal of Freedom
DENVER, CO (July 7, 2022) – Former United States Senator, Al Simpson, has been selected by President Joe Biden as his first recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to be awarded Thursday, July 7th at the White House. Al Simpson has been with the firm Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh Jardine P.C. since the firm Simpson Kepler and Edwards, started by his father, Millard Simpson, merged with the Burg firm in 1998.
Initiated by former President John Kennedy in 1963 and carried on by every U.S. president since, the Presidential Medal of Freedom is our nation’s highest civilian honor. Recipients of this most prestigious award belong to a class of individuals who have “…made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, world peace, or other significant societal, public or private endeavors” according to the official announcement made by the White House last week.
Al Simpson, Cody, WY native and resident, represented the Republican Party in the U.S. Senate for 18 years, serving as Senate majority and minority whip, and co-chair of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform. Simpson’s long history in public service and legal advocacy consistently encompasses his commitment to working with those across the aisle (and opposing sides in the courtroom), prioritizing compromise and collaboration.
Al Simpson and President Joe Biden’s relationship spans 55 years, and they worked hand-in-hand from 1989-1996 as members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Orrin Hatch, a 2018 recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, worked together with former senator Simpson and President Biden on the oversight of a plethora of pivotal hearings. In relation to the Senate Judiciary hearings, Simpson stated, “We went through many ups and downs on that committee; Most of us thought we were Americans first and then Republicans second.”
Al Simpson travailed with democrats across the aisle to pass vital legislation. Many of the bills he sponsored were co-sponsored by multiple democrats, including: Veterans’ Compensation and Program Improvements Amendments of 1983, Bill to Amend Title 38 U.S. Code extending VA Medical Services, Veterans’ Disability Compensation, Housing and Memorial Benefits Amendments of 1981, and the Joint Resolution Designating the Month of June as National Forest System Month in 1991.
“While in the Senate with Ted Kennedy and Joe Biden, it was never about being a Republican or a Democrat – we were all working together to do what was best for the United States of America” said Al when speaking with Michael Burg this week.
Late last month, Al Simpson appeared in a new commercial supporting U.S. Representative Liz Cheney for her reelection campaign. Liz Cheney has publicly spoken out against former President Trump for his alleged role in the January 6, 2021 Capitol riot and his attempts to challenge the results of the 2020 U.S. presidential election.
Michael Burg, founding shareholder of Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh Jardine P.C. stated, “Working with Al is one of the greatest honors of my life and for this firm. Al is a truly amazing human and American who has done, and continues to do, so much for this country.”
Al Simpson was presented his Presidential Medal of Freedom award this Thursday, accompanied by 7 guests, including his wife Ann Simpson, son (and Burg Simpson shareholder) Colin Simpson, son Hon. Bill Simpson, and grandchildren.
President Biden, in his introductory remarks at today’s awards ceremony, said of Al, “One of the most decent, stand-up, genuine guys I’ve ever served with – and I’ve served with a lot of senators- is this guy, Al Simpson. Al is the real deal. Former United States senator from his beloved Wyoming, a republican, we served together in the United States Senate for nearly 2 decades. One of the great things about Al, he never takes himself too seriously – nor takes me seriously. All kidding aside, this is the real deal, one of the finest men I’ve ever worked with. At his core, he’s always believed in the common good and what’s best for the nation. We didn’t agree on everything, though we agreed on a whole heck of a lot. He never allowed his party or state get in the way of what he thought was right. He allowed his conscience to be his guide. He believed in forging real relationships, even with people on the other side of the aisle – proving we can do anything when we work together, as the United States of America. It matters, it matters it matters. We need more of your spirit back in the United States Senate, on both sides of the aisle.”
