Beecher et al. v. Biological Resource Center Inc. et al.
Maricopa County Superior Court
Biological Resource Center located in Phoenix, Arizona, held itself out to the community as a body donation facility that was committed to scientific and medical research. Several families donated the remains of their loved ones to BRC for this very purpose and believed that the bodies of their relatives would be used to advance science. But in 2014, following an FBI raid and investigation of the BRC facility, the families learned that the bodies of their loved ones had been mutilated and sold piece by piece for a variety of non-medical purposes. After a four-week trial in Maricopa County, the jury found in favor of 10 of the 21 plaintiffs and awarded a total of $58.5 million in compensatory and punitive damages.
