Tomorrow, the FDA's Advisory Committee will convene regarding the safety of Yaz/Yasmin, Bayer's oral contraceptives (as well as other drospirenone-containing oral contraceptives).
All independent studies have shown that Yaz/Yasmin carry an elevated risk - two to three times greater - of potentially fatal blood clots compared to other oral contraceptives.
A statement regarding the meeting, attributable to Michael S. Burg, co-lead attorney for the 10,000 plaintiffs in the pending litigation against Bayer (MDL 2100), follows:
"We are dismayed, that on the eve of such a critical meeting - when the lives of thousands of women truly hang in the balance - the FDA has already showed its hand, choosing to exclude critical evidence that shows Bayer deliberately misled regulators.
"The exclusion of former FDA commissioner David Kessler's report is patently absurd and impossible to explain to the thousands of victims who have died or suffer every day because Bayer knowingly chose to place profits over safety.
"Dr. Kessler's report was unsealed after the FDA's arbitrarily instituted deadline, and we implore the Administration to include it. The exclusion serves only to protect Bayer, a negligent corporation that the FDA is duty-bound to regulate.
"It is time that the FDA once and for all act to protect the best interests of the public rather than the interests of the pharmaceutical industry. Countless lives depend on it."

Safety concerns regarding the popular birth control pill Yaz have further increased following a new FDA Study. In a statement Thursday, the FDA revealed that preliminary results of the FDA-funded study found that women exposed to drospirenone-containing birth control pills such as Yaz, Gianvi, Loryna, Yasmin, Ocella, Syeda, and Zarah, Beyaz, and Safyral may be at a 75 percent greater chance of developing blood colts and other yaz-related serious injury when compared to women taking other types of contraceptive medicines. The FDA has issued an updated consumer safety alert for drospirenone on its website, and has also revealed that results of this latest survey will be discussed at a joint meeting of the Reproductive Health Drugs Advisory Committee and the Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee on December 8, 2011.
Burg Simpson founding shareholder Michael S. Burg was appointed by the Honorable David Herndon of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois to serve as Co-Lead Counsel in the Yaz/Yasmin Multi-District Litigation. Mr. Burg represents thousands of women from across the United States bring legal action against Bayer – the manufacturers of Yaz.
IMPORTANT: If your birth control pill contains drospirenone, do not stop taking it without first talking to your healthcare professional.
