ReNu Recall Claims Attorneys
Persons using Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc contact solution with their soft contact lenses are at risk of developing fungal keratitis infections from the Fusarium fungus, a rare but serious and painful eye infection that can cause permanent blindness or significant loss of vision. On April 13, 2006, Bausch & Lomb asked US Retailers to remove ReNu with MoistureLoc from their shelves, while the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) investigated at least 109 suspected cases. On May 15, 2006, the FDA and Bausch & Lomb permanently withdrew the product. The FDA completed its investigation of Bausch & Lomb's manufacturing plant in Greenville, SC, where US supplies of the solution were manufactured, and reported more than 20 violations in is manufacturing process.

It appears that the cause of the infection lies in the unique formulation of the solution. Most contact solutions use one polymer, but ReNu with MoistureLoc contains three polymers to increase moisture and comfort. The polymers actually work to trap the fungus and prevent the disinfectant in the solution from killing it. It also appears that the disinfectant used, Alexadine, may be part of the problem. Prior to its use in ReNu with MoistureLoc, Alexadine had only been used in mouthwash and had never before been used in contact lens solution. One of the FDA's findings was that Alexadine had not been properly tested by Bausch & Lomb.
Fungal Keratitis is a rare but serious and painful eye infection that can cause permanent blindness or significant loss of vision, caused by the Fusarium fungus. This disease has been associated with the use of Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc. Often, fusarium keratitis is misdiagnosed because it is rare. Because Bausch & Lomb failed to disclose the problem, doctors sometimes try to treat the problem with steroids, which "feed" the fungus and exacerbate the injuries. The fungus literally eats the cornea and often requires a corneal transplant.
