On July 18, 2005, Guidant Corporation, a manufacturer of pacemakers, announced a voluntarily recall of certain pacemakers. The recall centers around a defect in a seal within the pacemakers that can leak and allow moisture to affect the electronic circuits inside the device, causing the pacemakers to fail to operate correctly. The problems may occur without warning and can lead to loss of consciousness, and possibly heart failure and death.
Guidant warned physicians in July 2005, that replacements might be needed for nine of its pacemaker models manufactured between 1997 and 2000. Pacemakers send electrical impulses to the heart to speed up or slow beats, and typically can remain implanted for seven to ten years before requiring replacement. In September 2005, Guidant recalled some of its Insignia and Nexus pacemakers due to failures, including nine cases requiring hospitalization.
The following models are affected by this recall. All were manufactured between November 25, 1997 and October 26, 2000.
