New Orleans Book Drive
On March 2nd, 2006, Burg Simpson delivered books, donated by employees of the firm, to Bradford Publishing Company in Denver who hosted a book drive to benefit the Louisiana libraries that were damaged or destroyed during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Prior to the hurricanes, Louisiana had 339 public libraries, 106 were either damaged or destroyed. Because the libraries are public, they are funded by the property taxes paid by businesses and homeowners. However, due to the extensive damage to the area, many businesses were destroyed and thousands of homeowners have decided not to return to the area.
Ashley Arroyo, an associate at Burg Simpson and a New Orleans native, had the opportunity to deliver the books donated by Burg Simpson employees to Bradford Publishing. "I think it is great that the Colorado legal community is thinking of creative ways to help Louisiana. As a New Orleans native whose family and friends have been greatly affected by Hurricanes Katrina & Rita, I really appreciate all the efforts made by everyone who donated books to help restock our Louisiana libraries."
"With the dwindling donations coming in for Hurricane Katrina victims, Burg Simpson wants to continue to find unique and meaningful ways to be a part of the rebuilding process of the Gulf Coast. It's easy to get lost in the magnitude of the devastation that the Gulf Coast endured, so here at Burg Simpson, we felt that this book drive would be a unique way to show our continued support and willingness to offer our help in whatever way we can," said Burg Simpson founder and President, Michael Burg.
Burg Simpson has participated in several fund-raising events over the past couple months to assist local families, as well as families devastated by the hurricanes this past fall. Specifically, they have worked with Habitat for Humanity by building homes and collecting tools and donations for Habitat for Humanity to assist in the effort to rebuild the Gulf Coast.
