How some brokers go bad
Saturday, April 29, 2006
Dallas lawyer Richard Lewins has brought claims on behalf of hundreds of investors, and his long experience has helped him understand how some brokers go bad:
The Thief represents less than 1 percent of cases. "He's just a bad guy who's stealing money, no different from the guy who goes in to rob the bank."
The Button Pusher shows up in about 25 percent of investor complaints, Mr. Lewins says. He can't resist the temptation of executing trades just to make commissions.
The rest of the cases usually represent a blend of:
The Hero - "The only way he gets to be cocktail party conversation is by buying the $2 stock that goes to $20. He truly wants to make the customer money. The problem is, he's not real concerned from the suitability standpoint."
The Pollyanna - "He got into the business in 1996 or '97, and all he saw was an up day. He was either ignorant to the fact that what goes up must come down or just ignored it."
The Loyal Salesman - "He's taking the company line: 'All our research tells us that things will come around.'"
