Methyl tertiary-butyl ether (MTBE) is a chemical compound added to gasoline to make it burn cleaner and more efficiently. Its purpose is to raise the oxygen content of gasoline, helping it burn more completely. MTBE biodegrades slowly and can remain in water for decades or more.

Before approving it as an additive, the oil industry did not test MTBE for its effects on human health. MTBE can make water smell and taste bad at certain concentrations if it is spilled or handled improperly and allowed to leak into groundwater. Under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), MTBE has been listed as a hazardous substance. It is also considered a potential human carcinogen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). After the introduction of gasoline containing MTBE for oxygenation, users of MTBE contaminated water reported experiencing adverse health symptoms, such as headaches, nausea, dizziness, and breathing difficulties.

Burg Simpson is experienced in handling problems, claims, and litigation arising from MTBE contamination. If you or a loved one has been exposed to or injured by MTBE, you may be entitled to compensation. Please call or email us today for a free consultation. At Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh & Jardine, P.C., our Colorado and Wyoming attorneys represent people like you who have suffered injuries because of exposure to pollutants.
