Fungal Keratitis Caused By Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc Contact Lens Solution
Recently there's been an increase in eye infections in soft contact lens wearers using Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc brand contact lens solution or a generic brand manufactured by them. These rare but serious eye infections are being caused by the fungus Fusarium and can result in permanent loss of vision requiring corneal transplant.
In early April the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a preliminary public health notification warning health care professionals and contact lens wearers of the increase in reports of eye infections, specifically fungal keratitis. Bausch & Lomb suspended shipments of the contact solution at that time, and then recalled the product on May 15, 2006. Claims against Bausch and Lomb have been filed in both federal and state courts.
On June 9, 2006, at the first day of the Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology Congress in Singapore, Bausch and Lomb announced that it had discovered why increased fungal infections were being reported among users of ReNu with MoistureLoc. While most contact lens solutions are formulated with one polymer, ReNu with MoistureLoc contains three polymers for the purpose of increasing eye moisture and comfort. Associate Professor Donald Tan, senior consultant ophthalmologist and director of the Singapore Eye Research Institute said, "The disinfectant in MoistureLoc is actually very effective. The problem is when you add other things in, like the polymers, to improve comfort. The polymers are actually trapping the fungus so that the disinfectant, which is very strong, cannot get at the fungus. So it is a formulation problem." Professor Tan went on to explain, "Bausch and Lomb has found that in open bottles you can get the fungus growing on the tip and on the cap of the open bottle because of the trapping of the fungus there. And what appears to be happening is that every time you add the solution onto your contact lens case, you actually add in fungus."
