Ortho Evra Warning Label Recognizes Higher Blood Clot Risk

It was announced yesterday that the warning label on the Ortho Evra birth control patch has been updated to alert women that the risk of blood clots in the legs and lungs may be higher for users of the patch as opposed to those women that use the pill. The FDA ordered the updated warning label to reflect the results of a study that found that women using the patch faced twice the risk of developing blood clots than those women taking the pill.

Johnson & Johnson also announced a change in the Ortho Evra warning label in November 2005 to disclose that women who use the Patch are exposed to approximately 60% more estrogen than those using an oral hormonal contraceptive. This increased exposure to estrogen makes the Patch comparable to the high-dose estrogen forms of the Pill that the FDA required to be removed from the market in 1988.

The Ortho Evra birth control patch became commercially available in 2002 and has been prescribed to more than 4 million women since its launch.

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio has appointed Michael Burg and Janet Abaray of Burg Simpson as lead counsel for all cases in Federal Court pending in the national Multi-District Litigation.
