On May 1, 2009, the FDA announced the withdrawal from the market of Hydroxycut products. These products are dietary supplements marketed for weight-loss, as fat burners, as energy-enhancers, as low carbohydrate diet aids, and for water loss. The FDA reported that it has received 23 reports of serious health problems related to these products, including liver damage requiring transplant and one death. FDA is currently investigating the relationship between Hydroxycut and serious injuries involving the liver and other organ systems.
Hydroxycut products are manufactured by Iovate Health Sciences Inc. under the brand names Iovate and MuscleTech. The following specific products have been recalled:

Because the Hydroxycut products are dietary supplements, rather than drugs, FDA oversight and pre-marketing approval is limited. However, FDA previously required that certain Hydroxycut products be withdrawn from the market because they contained ephedra, a dietary supplement banned by the FDA in 2005. Thousands of consumers reported injury and in some cases death due to ingestion of ephedra containing dietary supplements, including Hydroxycut. The ephedra lawsuits involving Hydroxycut and other brands were coordinated in the Southern District of New York. Janet G. Abaray of Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh & Jardine, PC acted as Plaintiffs' Liaison Counsel for the Ephedra MDL, where she worked extensively with the ephedra-containing version of Hydroxycut and other dietary supplements.
Today's market withdrawal involves the new formulation of Hydroxycut, which was developed due to the FDA ban on dietary supplements containing ephedra. If you have used Hydroxycut and suffered serious personal injury please contact the attorneys at Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh & Jardine, PC.
