Hotel Fire Injuries

At approximately 11:00 a.m. local time on Friday, January 25, 2008, a three-alarm fire broke out at the top of MGM Mirage’s Monte Carlo Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas strip, forcing the evacuation of all 3,002 rooms and its casino. More than a dozen people, at the time of this writing, have suffered injuries.

In this latest hotel fire in Vegas, five hotel guests and eight engineers suffered from smoke inhalation, according to a spokesman for the MGM hotel. According to reports, the hotel fire was restricted to the exterior of the building, and, allegedly, the sprinklers did not even go off in some of those rooms (on the top floor) around the fire because no smoke was inside. The fire affected the roof of the Monte Carlo hotel and at least two floors below.
The Monte Carlo hotel has certainly seen its share of tragedy in the last few decades. This fire brought back memories of a blaze in 1980 at the MGM hotel that killed 87 people and led to new safety measures for hotels across the United States. Fortunately, no deaths have been reported in the 2008 blaze.
