DePuy has taken steps to withdraw these medical devices after reports published in Britain revealed that between 12 to 13 percent of patients receiving the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and/or the ASR XL Acetabular System would need corrective surgery within five years – a rate more than twice the industry average. According to DePuy, evidence suggests that the risk of revision surgery is greater in female patients and recipients of devices with a head size of less than 50mm in diameter.

Concerns surrounding the quality of the ASR Hip Resurfacing System and ASR XL Acetabular System first surfaced two years ago, after it emerged that an increasing number of patients fitted with these implants were forced to undergo painful and expensive operations after their devices failed. According to reports, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received more than 400 complaints regarding these devices since the start of 2008.
