When we go to the hospital or to our doctor’s office to have a test performed, we like to think that the test itself safe. However, this is not always the case. If you had a colonoscopy or some other procedure performed before December 2008 that required the cleansing of your bowels, you were probably asked to use (or drink) an over-the-counter oral sodium phosphate (OSP) product.
On December 11, 2008, the FDA announced that a serious but rare kidney injury known as Acute Phosphate Nephropathy was associated with the use of OSP products. Acute Phosphate Nephropathy occurs when deposits of calcium-phosphate crystals build in the renal tubules. The condition can lead to permanent loss of kidney function. FDA therefore announced that over the counter OSP products should no longer be used for bowel cleansing, and that prescription OSP products must contain a black box warning of the risk of acute kidney injury.
Immediately after the FDA announcement, the C.B. Fleet Company announced the recall of its over the counter oral sodium phosphate (OSP) products: Fleet Phospho-soda and Fleet Phospho-soda EZ Prep Bowel Cleansing System. Both Fleet OSP products had been routinely prescribed to cleanse the bowels before colonoscopies and have been used by millions of Americans.
Although very rare, Acute Phosphate Nephropathy (also referred to in the medical literature as Nephrocalcinosis), can cause chronic kidney disease, requiring life-altering kidney dialysis treatments or kidney transplant surgery. If you or a loved one has used Fleet Phospho-soda or the Fleet Phospho-soda EZ Prep Bowel Cleansing System and believe you have a legal claim due to renal dysfunction, the experienced pharmaceutical litigation attorneys at Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh Jardine, P.C. in Denver, Colorado can assist you. We are currently representing clients who used the Fleet Phospho-soda products and are now facing a serious medical condition.
