What are the signs of traumatic brain injury?

Traumatic brain injury can occur with no visible wounds, and no known impact to the head. Signs to watch for include:

• Dilated or unequal size of pupils
• Slurred speech
• Confusion
• Difficulty thinking
• Dizziness or balance problems
• Poor coordination
• Weakness
• Lethargy
• Difficulty moving body parts
• Difficulty swallowing
• Numbness or tingling
• Vision changes
• Ringing ears
• Headache
• Extreme irritability
• Crying or laughing inappropriately
• Vomiting
• Loss of bowel control or bladder control
• Seizure
• Fatigue
• Slow breathing rate and increase in blood pressure
• Slow pulse
• Respiratory failure
• Lack of responsiveness

What are the different types of traumatic brain injury?

Traumatic brain injuries can be open head injuries in which there is visible damage to the head or skull, or closed injuries which include no visible damage. Types of brain injury include:

• Concussion
• Contusion
• Coup-contrecoup contusion
• Diffuse axonal
• Penetration
• Shaken baby syndrome
• Second impact syndrome

How long will it take to get back to normal?

Each case is unique. Doctors still know very little about the brain and even specialists cannot accurately predict recovery time. Some TBI victims fully recover in a matter of weeks or months, while others may suffer life-long disability. Even more confusing is the fact that the severity of the brain injury does not determine the harm or recovery time. It depends largely on the area of the brain which was affected.

I was told that my brain injury was mild, but I am having serious problems. Is this normal?

Yes. Severity in TBI is misleading. The area of the brain which was injured will influence the severity of the problems you experience far more than the initial reaction or severity of injury. A “mild” brain injury can be just as debilitating, in the long term, as a severe brain injury.

Since my brain injury, I do not have trouble concentrating but have severe mood swings? Is this caused by my injury?

It could be. It is not uncommon for TBI to cause mood swings, behavioral changes and personality changes, even if other symptoms are not, or do not seem to be, present. Again, this depends largely on the area of the brain which was injured.

What is Post Concussion Syndrome?

PSC is a combination of disorders which occurs after TBI. Even a mild brain injury can cause PCS. The symptoms can include cognitive and memory problems, emotional and behavioral changes, and physical symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and vision changes.

Do all head injuries cause brain injury?

To some degree yes, but that does not mean that every bump on the head will cause long-term problems. In many cases your brain will heal without ever presenting symptoms. On the other hand, brain injuries can occur with no apparent head injury.
