Digitek is the brand name for digoxin, a heart medication. Digitek is used to regularize the heartbeat and keep it strong and effective. The heart normally beats in response to brain messages that keep it beating regularly. One problem people with heart disease experience is that the electrical (nervous) system is impaired, so that regular nerve messages do not reach the heart. These nerve messages are what keeps the heart beating in a normal rhythm. When the nerve messages are not received properly, the heartbeat can become fast and ineffective, too slow, erratic, or even non-existent. Digitek is one drug used to correct the conduction of nerve activity.
Frequently Asked Questions About Digitek
Digitek Lots Recalled
Digitek is distributed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals under a “Bertek” label and by UDL Laboratories, Inc. with a “UDL” label. All lots of both Bertek and UDL Laboratories Digitek® have been recalled. The company that manufactured them is Actavis Totowa, in New Jersey. Actavis Totowa has posted a news release on the FDA website warning the public that some Digitek tablets are double the thickness they should be, and contain a double dose. The ingestion of these pills, that deliver twice the dose, can lead to Digoxin Toxicity, a potentially fatal condition.
Symptoms of Digoxin Toxicity
- Dizziness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Low blood pressure
- Slow heart beat
- Cardiac instability
- Death
People with kidney problems may be particularly endangered, as the excess drug would not be easily excreted.
This is a voluntary recall done with the FDA’s knowledge. The FDA is warning physicians via its MedWatch site and retailers are being urged to return this product. Actavis has ongoing information on its own site with several pages and some Frequently Asked Questions.
If you have used this recalled drug, please immediately contact your physician. If you believe you may have a legal claim, please contact us for a free consultation. At Burg Simpson Eldredge Hersh & Jardine, P.C., our pharmaceutical injury lawyers represent those who have been injured by double-dose Digitek. We will be glad to give you information on your legal rights and options.
