"Buildable Hours" events in Denver, Colorado
On October 8, 2005, Burg, Simpson, Eldredge, Hersh & Jardine P.C. kicked off its year-long "Buildable Hours Campaign." Borrowing the "Buildable Hours" phrase from Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver, eight Burg Simpson shareholders and employees spent their Saturday building a home with Habitat for Humanity for a local family. Through Burg Simpson's efforts and the efforts of several other groups of volunteers, the family of Gary and Maria Howard will have a brand new house that they can call home, just in time for the holiday season.

When asked what home meant to her, Diane Smith, a Burg Simpson attorney who participated in the Habitat event, said "I know what home means to me, it's my center and my refuge. To have the chance to give that sense of belonging to someone else was an incredibly rewarding experience. " Home is more than the walls and the roof over your head, it sets the stage for years of memories and happy moments spent with the ones that you love. For Gary and Maria Howard, their Habitat home will give their daughter, Esmerelda, a yard to play in for the first time.
When a house becomes a home those "Buildable Hours" turn into so much more than the work that was put into the actual build. It turns the hours of hammering, drilling, and painting into an overwhelming sense of pride, accomplishment, and satisfaction. When asked what it was like to work with future homeowner Gary Howard, Michael Bonifazi, a Burg Simpson attorney who participated in the build, said, "Working together with Gary reinforced for me that houses are constructed with building materials, but neighborhoods are built by people. The feeling of happiness and sense of accomplishment that comes with one day's work is incredible."
Burg Simpson, will be participating in several Habitat fund-raising events over the next year to assist local families and families devastated by the hurricanes. Specifically, they will be participating in the national Habitat for Humanity relief effort, "Operation Home Delivery" where volunteers will be pre-building homes to ship to the Gulf Coast. "We believe that a long-term effort will be needed to rebuild the Gulf Coast and we are committed to providing assistance to these families," stated Burg Simpson founder, Michael Burg. In addition to collecting donations for Toys for Tots during the holidays, Burg Simpson will also collect tools and donations for Habitat for Humanity to assist in the effort to rebuild the Gulf Coast. "A one-time only fund raising effort just isn't appropriate for the devastation that the Gulf Coast has suffered. We have the ability and the obligation to provide support, long-term," said Burg Simpson attorney, Tiffanie Stasiak.
Harry Connick Jr., the newly appointed honorary Chair of Operation Home Delivery for Habitat, recently appeared before lawmakers urging them to help rebuild the Gulf Coast. He said, "Why are these Habitat houses so important? For many reasons. A house is security, safety and the beginning of stability for the families who have lost so much. But more than that, these houses are the foundations of their new lives and of new, vibrant communities. And it is important to note that these are not trailers or transitional places, but permanent, beautiful homes that people can be proud of." His comments are universally relevant and representative of the mission of Habitat for Humanity, where the central theme centers around growth and the positive changes that a decent home can offer. Burg Simpson is proud to offer support to Habitat and they are hopeful that through the hard work and determination of Habitat's volunteers that families will continue to have a renewed sense of hope in the face of adversity.
As members of the Bar and as members of the community, Burg Simpson invites others to find a charitable cause and devote their time and energy to it.
