Auto accidents come in many forms. The type of accident you are in can affect the types and severity of injuries and damage involved. It can also be an indicator of what may have caused the accident.

Accidents involving two or more automobiles
- Head-on collisions
When vehicles moving in opposite directions strike each other in a direct frontal impact collision, the force of the impact can be extreme causing serious injuries and damage. This type of accident typically occurs when one or both vehicles cross the center line accidentally or when passing another vehicle, or when one car travels the wrong way down a one-way street.
- Rear end collisions
A rear end collision occurs when one vehicle strikes another vehicle from behind. The most common injury caused by this type of accident is whiplash, but rear end collisions can be fatal. They typically occur when the vehicle in front suddenly slows down or stops and the driver of the following car cannot react quickly enough to avoid impact.
- Side impact collisions
When one vehicle plows into the side of another, injuries can be severe. Impact to the front or rear of a vehicle can be absorbed as the vehicle crumples, but occupants have almost no protection when the side of the vehicle is hit. This type of accident typically occurs when one vehicle runs a red light or a stop sign and hits, or is hit by, the vehicle which had the right of way.
- Multi-car pile-ups
Typically occurring on highways, multi-car pile-ups can involve over a hundred vehicles in one accident and often involve multiple fatalities. Once the initial vehicle, or vehicles, suddenly slows down or stops in dense, fast-moving traffic, the following vehicles cannot slow down in time to avoid the accident. A single vehicle may be hit from many directions in this type of an accident. Often, drivers and passengers will get out of their vehicles while the pile-up is still occurring and be struck or crushed.
Single vehicle accidents
It is easy to assume that a single vehicle accident is the fault of the driver. However, other factors, such as defective vehicles or defective roadways, are often to blame.
- Rollovers
Rollovers can occur in accidents involving multiple vehicles, but the majority of rollovers are single vehicle crashes. The fatality rate in rollover accidents is very high, even though they are a rare type of accident. SUV's are the most likely vehicles to roll, followed by vans and pick-up trucks. Design flaws and faulty tires are common causes of rollovers.
- Frontal impact collisions
Single vehicle frontal impact collisions involve an auto striking an object. This can be an obstacle in the road, but more often occurs when a vehicle runs off the road and into an object or barrier.
Other auto accidents
Besides single vehicle crashes and accidents between two or more cars or trucks, auto accidents can involve collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian, bicycle, train, or all-terrain vehicle.
