Manufactured by Merck, JANUVIA® (sitagliptin) and Janumet® (sitagliptin/metformin) are prescription drugs used to treat type 2 diabetes. Both drugs have been linked to fatal and non-fatal cases of acute pancreatitis. Pancreatitis can be a life-threatening injury or lead to life-threatening complications. Users have also reported a number of other adverse side effects including, chronic abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.
JANUVIA® and Janumet® are a once-a-day prescription pill that help increase the production of insulin made in the pancreas and decrease sugar levels (glucose) produced by the liver. Neither drug has a generic equivalent.
In September 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommended changes be made to the prescribing information for JANUVIA®. In December 2009, the Agency reported that it had been notified of eighty-eight post-marketing cases of acute pancreatitis, including two cases of hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis. Of those eighty-eight cases, more than two-thirds required emergency hospitalization.
Despite their obvious links to a variety of life-threatening illnesses, neither JANUVIA® and Janumet® have been recalled, and both drugs remain on the market.
